What: The Saluting Our Heroes luncheon pays tribute to the brave men and women who have sacrificed and served our country heroically in the face of conflicts around the globe. This event highlights the important work that organizations and companies across the state, such as the National Ability Center, are doing to provide cutting edge care and rehabilitation to active duty and veteran U.S. service members and their families who have sustained disabilities due to the costs of war.
There is no cost to guests to attend this event. Donations are kindly requested during the luncheon and guests are encouraged to make a contribution to support U.S. service members discover their abilities.
Why: Warriors and their families deserve high-quality, non-institutional environments where they can truly connect and heal. They need programs that support and challenge them to learn new skills, set higher goals, improve communication, encourage relatedness, and extend their reach beyond perceived limits. Since 1985, the National Ability Center has served thousands of veterans, active duty soldiers and their families. Programs for military personnel, including those that focus on adaptive sport, recreation and wellness, have grown from 50 participants in 2010 to more than 900 individuals in 2014. Total military-related groups attending programs at the National Ability Center increased from 49 in 2014 to 75 in 2015; growth of 53% within a year.
All funds raised at the Saluting Our Heroes luncheon will directly support for programs for military service members and their families. A 501(c) (3) non-profit, tax-exempt organization the National Ability Center maintains a sound fiscal track record; a minimum of 80% of each dollar donated to the organization is directed back to support and build capacity within adaptive recreation, sport development, educational programs and services.
Who (we serve): National Ability Center began in 1985 as a community-based program serving just 45 veterans with disabilities. For 30 years, our continuing mission has been to provide programming that empowers participants of all abilities – including athletes, veterans, adults and children – to achieve more than they feel physically and emotionally capable of doing. Today, these programs serve 3,400 people of all abilities each year through 22,250 lessons and experiences within a wide variety of sports, recreation and educational activities. Participants come from all socioeconomic backgrounds, from all 50 US states and 15 countries around the globe. Through strategic partnerships with organizations including Wounded Warrior Project and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, National Ability Center now serves more than 900 military service related individuals each year. National Ability Center is recognized as a chapter of Disabled Sports USA and a US Paralympic Sports Club.
The National Ability Center provides a safe environment where we made a million memories! The opportunity to be with other families who understand you and share similar circumstances was unbelievable. I would recommend this program to any Veteran who is feeling alone in their disability. Come do things you would have never thought were possible again!” - Wife of United States Marine
